E-Reference Shelf  

Reference sources on a variety of topics. Many will provide brief descriptions or overviews of a subject, concept, or person. Some sources may include statistical information as well.

Need just the definition of a word from a general dictionary? Try this first!

    A modern English language dictionary and English language reference service, which includes an Oxford dictionary with audio pronunciations, advanced search capabilities, and more. Also included are thesauruses, and sections entitled "Writing skills," "For writers and editors" (with sources on modern English usage), and "Example sentences" and "Puzzles."

When and why to use these sources.

If all you need is a definition of a word or term, or an overview of a topic or concept, use these sources.

Why read an entire book or journal article if a brief overview will do?
